2017 Marucci CAT7 USSSA Bat Review
The senior-league CAT7 brought Marucci's AZ4X one-piece alloy to the big-barrel USSSA market in the popular -10. It is the travel-ball version of the bat that built Marucci's reputation for clean, durable, no-break-in alloy performance.
The Score
How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Ring-free AZ4X barrel spreads a wide, dead-spot-free sweet spot.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Thin, responsive alloy walls give honest pop from swing one.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Stiff one-piece feel with AV2 knob holding down mishit sting.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: AZ4X alloy and Marucci's warranty record are a known quantity.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: A proven alloy big-barrel that holds up season after season.
Why this score: The senior-league CAT7 delivers the same big, forgiving one-piece alloy barrel and day-one performance that made the CAT line famous, with excellent durability. It loses a touch only to the stiff feedback inherent in one-piece alloy and a balanced swing that won't please end-load seekers.
Our Review
The 2017 CAT7 senior-league bat takes the one-piece, 100% AZ4X alloy design that made the BBCOR CAT7 a high-school favorite and puts it in a 2 3/4" big barrel for USSSA travel ball. In the -10 it is balanced and easy to control, with a ring-free barrel that maximizes the trampoline effect and a sweet spot Marucci tuned to run dead-spot free. The traditional, stiff one-piece feel is direct, but the second-generation AV2 anti-vibration knob takes most of the sting out of off-center contact. There is no break-in here: it performs from the first swing and stays consistent, which is a big part of why the CAT line earned its reputation as a reliable alloy workhorse.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- AZ4X one-piece alloy is hot out of the wrapper with no break-in
- Ring-free barrel delivers a large sweet spot with no dead spots
- AV2 anti-vibration knob keeps sting low on mishits
Cons
- One-piece alloy transmits more feedback than a two-piece composite
- Balanced swing won't satisfy hitters chasing a heavy end-load
