How we score ↗The grade, density and grain of the billet — slope-of-grain, ink-dot certification, and whether it’s a true pro-cut. The headline for a wood bat. A primary driver of the overall score.
Barrel size and the turn-model profile (110/243/271/I13 and the like) — how much hitting surface and forgiveness the shape gives you.
How the wood feels and sounds at contact — the flex/stiffness of the handle, and the crack off a quality billet.
How well the wood holds up — density and grain quality (and, for composite wood, engineered toughness). Far more important on a wood bat than on alloy.
How hard the ball comes off for a wood bat — real, but a lighter factor here since wood isn’t about chasing max exit velocity.
Quality per dollar versus comparable pro-grade or composite wood. Shown for context; NOT factored into the overall score.
Why this score: Scored as a fungo, where the job is control and all-day balance, not power: the light, balanced turn earns top swing-weight and feel. Sweet spot and power are low by design for a slim fungo barrel; pro-grade maple keeps durability up despite no warranty.
Our Review
Old Hickory's fungos are a coaching staple, handcrafted from pro-grade maple with a consistent slim barrel and a light, perfectly balanced swing so you can hit ground balls and fly balls all practice without wearing out your hands. The line covers two main stock turns — the F2 and the F3 — which differ mainly in length and barrel taper; both are solid maple with a flared knob into a comfortable handle and a cupped end. There is also an XRF custom fungo for coaches who want a specific length or finish. Note that fungos are not covered by warranty, which is standard for the category since they take a beating by design. For control, balance and durability on the practice field, the F2 and F3 are about as good as a maple fungo gets.
