2026 Old Hickory TC1 Pro Maple Wood Bat Review
Old Hickory's 491-turn pro maple with a big 2 9/16" barrel, flared knob and 29/32" handle — a power-leaning gamer cut from premium billets.
The Score
How we score ↗The grade, density and grain of the billet — slope-of-grain, ink-dot certification, and whether it’s a true pro-cut. The headline for a wood bat. A primary driver of the overall score.
Barrel size and the turn-model profile (110/243/271/I13 and the like) — how much hitting surface and forgiveness the shape gives you.
How the wood feels and sounds at contact — the flex/stiffness of the handle, and the crack off a quality billet.
How well the wood holds up — density and grain quality (and, for composite wood, engineered toughness). Far more important on a wood bat than on alloy.
How hard the ball comes off for a wood bat — real, but a lighter factor here since wood isn’t about chasing max exit velocity.
Quality per dollar versus comparable pro-grade or composite wood. Shown for context; NOT factored into the overall score.
Why this score: Big barrel and quality lumber drive solid sweet-spot and power marks; the slight end-load trims swing-weight ease, and the no-warranty stock model holds value back a touch.
Our Review
The TC1 is one of Old Hickory's larger-barrel pro turns, built on turning style 491 with a 2 9/16" barrel and a 29/32" handle that runs into a flared knob. That combination puts mass out toward the end, so it swings with a little more authority than a standard 271-style profile and rewards hitters who like to drive the ball. Old Hickory pulls these from billets that pass a strict density screen before they ever reach the lathe, which is a big part of why the brand is trusted on pro back fields. The black-barrel/wine-handle finish is a clean, traditional look. Note this is a stock pro bat with no warranty, which is standard for hand-selected lumber at this tier.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Large 2 9/16" barrel with a slight end-load for real power potential
- Hand-selected, density-screened maple from a respected pro supplier
- Flared knob and 29/32" handle suit hitters coming off metal
Cons
- End-loaded feel is less forgiving for pure contact hitters
- No warranty, typical of stock pro maple but a consideration at this price
