2026 Old Hickory TRPD01 Torpedo Pro Maple Wood Bat Review
Old Hickory's torpedo turn — a J143M-based bat reshaped so the thickest wood sits where most hitters make contact, just below the end of the barrel.
The Score
How we score ↗The grade, density and grain of the billet — slope-of-grain, ink-dot certification, and whether it’s a true pro-cut. The headline for a wood bat. A primary driver of the overall score.
Barrel size and the turn-model profile (110/243/271/I13 and the like) — how much hitting surface and forgiveness the shape gives you.
How the wood feels and sounds at contact — the flex/stiffness of the handle, and the crack off a quality billet.
How well the wood holds up — density and grain quality (and, for composite wood, engineered toughness). Far more important on a wood bat than on alloy.
How hard the ball comes off for a wood bat — real, but a lighter factor here since wood isn’t about chasing max exit velocity.
Quality per dollar versus comparable pro-grade or composite wood. Shown for context; NOT factored into the overall score.
Why this score: The relocated mass can sharpen the sweet spot for the right hitter, but it is contact-point dependent, so the sweet-spot score is strong rather than top. Value dips slightly because the torpedo concept is hitter-specific, not a universal gain; pro-grade maple and the 60-day warranty hold durability up.
Our Review
The TRPD01 is Old Hickory's take on the torpedo (or 'bowling pin') barrel that broke into the majors in 2025. It starts from the J143M and redistributes the barrel mass so the fattest part of the bat sits a little lower, where many hitters actually make contact, rather than out at the very end. The idea is a denser, more concentrated sweet spot in the contact zone; the trade-off is that mis-hits out toward the tip of the barrel lose some surface. It is a polarizing, hitter-specific concept rather than a universal upgrade, and whether it helps depends entirely on where you tend to make contact. Made to order from #1-grade hard rock maple or birch with the 60-day warranty. A genuinely interesting option for a hitter who knows they catch the ball below the end of the barrel.
