2018 DeMarini CF Zen BBCOR Bat Review
DeMarini's flagship balanced composite for 2018, the CF Zen swung light and hit big — but it became infamous when a batch was decertified for BBCOR play early that year. Performance was top-tier; durability, warranty, and that recall cloud the picture.
There's a newer version available. See the 2020 CF Zen — the current model → 8.2/10Been on the market a while — keep an eye out for in-season price drops.

How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: On hitting alone the 2018 CF Zen is elite for its era: a huge sweet spot, light balanced swing, and springy composite feel earn top marks. Durability and value fall hard because of the documented composite breakage, the warranty frustrations, and the BBCOR decertification episode that pulled a batch from legal play — all reasons a more reliable alternative is the safer buy.
Our Review
The 2018 DeMarini CF Zen BBCOR was the balanced, lightest-swinging bat in DeMarini's flagship line, a two-piece full-composite build with a Paraflex barrel and a streamlined 3Fusion handle and end cap. On performance it was everything the CF reputation promised: a big, lively sweet spot, springy composite feel, and a fast, balanced swing that made it one of the most coveted BBCOR bats of its year. The complication is well known. In early 2018 a portion of CF Zen BBCOR bats failed to meet the BBCOR standard after production and were decertified, removing them from legal high-school and college play and prompting a buyer-facing fix from the manufacturer; prospective used-bat buyers should verify a given bat's status before purchase. Layered on top is the durability and warranty record that follows DeMarini composites of this period. The performance was genuine, but between the decertification episode and the support concerns, a hitter is better served by a preferred-brand alternative.
Also worth a look: Marucci CAT8 BBCOR — A balanced, big-barrel BBCOR that is hot out of the wrapper and famously durable, with none of the breakage, warranty, or certification concerns — from a preferred brand that stands behind its product..
Insider Note
On a visit to DeMarini's factory in Oregon, I saw 4–5 pallets of broken bats waiting on warranty returns — and was told that's a normal day. Durability has always been the knock on DeMarini, and it's a big reason we steer hitters to brands that stand behind their product.
