2020 DeMarini CF Zen BBCOR Bat Review
The 2020 CF Zen is DeMarini's two-piece, all-composite BBCOR with a Paraflex Plus barrel and 3Fusion connection. It swings light and balanced with a forgiving sweet spot, but composite durability has long been the line's weak point.

How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Paraflex Plus composite barrel is large and forgiving.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Lively barrel produces strong pop once broken in.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Smooth two-piece composite feel with dampened mishits.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: Documented cracking and dead-barrel issues drag this down.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: Good performance undercut by reliability and warranty concerns.
Why this score: On performance alone the CF Zen is an excellent balanced composite, but the line's documented durability problems and difficult warranty experience pull down the value and reliability marks honestly.
Our Review
The 2020 CF Zen is a two-piece, 100% Paraflex Plus composite BBCOR built for bat speed and a smooth, balanced feel. The 3Fusion connection ties the barrel and handle together to redistribute weight toward the hands and dampen feedback, while the ReACTION end cap stiffens the barrel end to keep the trampoline lively. The swing weight is balanced, which makes it easy to whip through the zone, and the composite barrel produces a large, forgiving sweet spot once it's broken in. The honest caveat with the CF line is durability and warranty support: composite BBCOR bats in this family have a documented history of cracking and dead barrels, and resolving warranty claims has frustrated buyers. It performs well when healthy, but the long-term value depends on getting a good one and keeping it that way.
Also worth a look: Marucci CATX2 — A comparable balanced BBCOR with a hot, lively barrel and a far stronger documented durability and warranty record than the CF line..
Insider Note
On a visit to DeMarini's factory in Oregon, I saw 4-5 pallets of broken bats waiting on warranty returns - and was told that's a normal day. Durability has always been the knock on DeMarini, and it's a big reason we steer hitters to brands that stand behind their product.
