How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: Exactly what an entry alloy should be - light, tough and cheap. It scores high on durability and value but is honestly limited on pop and feel against composite bats.
Our Review
The 2020 Amethyst (FP20AMY) is Easton's budget, beginner-friendly fastpitch bat and a very different animal from the Ghost. It is a one-piece bat made from 100% ALX50 military-grade aluminum, so there is no break-in, no compression to worry about, and durability is excellent - alloy simply does not crack the way composite can. The drop-11 weighting and light, balanced swing make it ideal for younger players developing bat speed and mechanics, and the all-sports grip helps cut sting on mishits. Approved for ASA/USA, USSSA, NSA, ISA and ISF, it is broadly legal for youth and rec play. The trade-off is performance ceiling: a one-piece alloy barrel will not match the pop, sweet-spot size or feel of a premium composite like the Ghost, and stronger hitters will outgrow it. As a first real fastpitch bat or a knock-around alloy, though, it is honest value.
Also worth a look: Easton Ghost Unlimited — our top fastpitch pick - the composite benchmark for hitters ready to step up.
